Pittsburgh vs. Los Angeles Dodgers, 21 April 2007

10:10 PM, FSNP, KDKA

Ian Snell (1-1, 1.80) vs. Brad Penny (3-0, 0.89).  Penny's ERA looks impressive, but he has struck out only six batters over 20.1 innings while walking eight, so he can't keep that up. He's also had some shoulder troubles this spring. He throws four-seam and two-seam fastballs, a curve and a splitter, but he sometimes has to limit his use of the curve and splitter - there were times in 2006 when he was relying very heavily on fastballs. Normally, you'd expect him to use all his pitches at this early point in the season, but with his shoulder troubles, who knows?

Snell is coming off three consecutive strong starts, during which he's struck out 20 batters and walked just six. Just as importantly, he's only allowed one homer.

It's irrelevant, but: Oliver Perez struck out nine Braves today and walked none. He has a 3.31 ERA on the year so far.
