The Post-Gazette reports (down at the bottom):
It's official now. Pine-Richland's Neil Walker is being transformed into a utility player: 3B-2B-OF-C. Second base seems to be the first priority for him to learn in camp, then outfield. The Pirates figure he has down third and catching. And, of course, as Walker mentioned in a Hot Stove Report two Sundays ago, he is all for trying to help the team by playing such a role.
Walker's heading down the Brandon Inge career path, complete with the power and the OBP issues. It'd be nice if, at some point in the future, the Pirates could really put Walker to work by using him as their second catcher, thus freeing themselves to do all kinds of fun things with their bench. Even more fun would be for Walker to prove doubters like me wrong and work his way into an everyday job somewhere, whether that's at the end of this season or next year.
