Scott Olsen Will Start Season On DL

22

The Pirates insist that Scott Olsen "is not hurt" but that he simply isn't ready to pitch yet due to the hamstring issues that caused him to miss time early in Spring Training. This makes sense - I saw him pitch a couple days ago against the Orioles at McKechnie and he didn't look sharp at all. If he were to be sent to the DL (and since the Pirates are removing him from games for now, that appears to be the mostly likely scenario), I guess the idea is that he would hang out in Bradenton for a couple weeks, perhaps pitch in scrimmages with the minor leaguers, and then potentially head to a rehab assignment either in Bradenton or one of the teams in the high minors. It looks like Charlie Morton will, in fact, win the fifth starter job. Also, it appears Garrett Olson's chances of making the team as a lefty reliever just went up. UPDATE: Olsen says that he will, in fact, start the season on the disabled list.
