Dejan Kovacevic tweets. Garrett Olson had pitched reasonably well, but given that the Pirates wanted to add Beimel to the roster, the two main choices were dropping Daniel McCutchen (or optioning him back to Class AAA and dropping someone like Chris Leroux) or dropping Olson. The Pirates had no intense need for a second bullpen lefty and probably felt that with Jeff Karstens heading to the rotation, they would rather just keep McCutchen around to pitch in long relief when needed. They had just acquired Olson via waivers, so it isn't as if he was a valuable commodity.
