Derrek Lee Placed On DL, Josh Harrison Recalled

The Pirates placed Derrek Lee on the 15-day DL today retroactive to August 10th. Lee was hit by a pitch in the Chicago series on August 3rd. He came back to play two games in the series against San Francisco Aug 8-9, but now the team has stated there is a bone fracture in his left wrist and he'll be out at least a couple weeks. Lee was 5-for-18 with a triple and two homers in his five games with the team thus far.

(Note: The odd thing about the injury is the ball was going to hit Lee in the hip and he took his hand off the bat and put it in harm's way, protecting his hip. I'm not sure I've ever seen that unless the ball was coming up around a player's head. An unlucky reaction, but I remember thinking how odd it was at the time.)

In the corresponding roster move Josh Harrison has been recalled from Indianapolis. This almost certainly means that Steve Pearce will be sent down when Jose Tabata is activated from the 15-day DL on Monday. Pearce has been awful since his return from the DL going only 3-for-37 with no extra base hits.

With roster expansion coming on September 1 it now appears more likely that Xavier Paul and Matt Diaz will be with the team until the end of the season. The one variable here is how quickly Alex Presley recovers and is reinstated from the DL. The team could chose to option Presley for a week or so in order to keep everyone in the organization and wait to make any further decisions until after the season.
