The Pirates finished the Florida portion of their Spring Training schedule with a 3-1 win over the Jays, thanks to a two-run, eighth-inning homer by Nate McLouth. Matt Hague then hit a solo homer in the ninth inning.
The Bucs nonetheless didn't get much offense in this one, which isn't surprising when facing someone as good as Brandon Morrow, who shut them down for the first four innings. (Pedro Alvarez's lone at-bat against Morrow was about as bad as you'd expect.) McLouth got two hits, and the only other Pirate with two was Jose Tabata, who singled on a bunt and, earlier, on a hit that Toronto's announcers called a "duck fart," which is apparently a slightly less family-friendly way of calling a hit a "duck snort." (The Jays announcers had a heck of a day. Later, one of them dropped this gem: "Colby Rasmus is … in baseball terms, we call him a hooker.")
Starter Jeff Karstens allowed one run over four innings, and then a rather motley bunch of relievers -- Daniel Moskos, Tim Alderson, Kris Johnson and Kyle Cofield -- pitched five scoreless innings after that. Alderson looked really good in his. I'm not sure how hard he was throwing, but he attacked the heart of the Jays order with some very good breaking pitches, striking out Kelly Johnson and Yan Gomes and getting Jose Bautista to ground out. Edwin Encarnacion managed a weak hit against him.
