The Pirates have agreed to sign supplemental pick Barrett Barnes, a toolsy outfielder from Texas Tech, for a $1 million bonus.
The bonus pool recommendation for that pick was $1,136,400, so the Pirates saved about $136,000 against the pool by signing Barnes. They also reportedly saved about $88,000 on sixth-rounder Eric Wood, so that makes about $225,000 they've saved so far. (I'm sure they'll also save on Jake Stallings, D.J. Crumlich and Pat Ludwig, who are all college seniors, but we don't yet know how much.)
My guess is that Barnes will play for State College to start, but sending him straight to West Virginia wouldn't be totally ridiculous either.
