Pirates' Minor League Roundup; OK Starts for Luis Heredia, Kyle McPherson

West Virginia was off on Wednesday and Bradenton's game was suspended with the score tied, 2-2, in the 6th. The Marauders' runs had come on Gift Ngoepe's 9th HR. Otherwise . . .

-P- Indianapolis took a 4-2 lead over Gwinnett into the 9th, but the normally reliable Tim Wood gave up four runs, leading to a 6-4 loss. Daniel Cabrera started but pitched only one inning due to a two and a half hour rain delay. Chris Leroux followed with 3.2 IP, but may have run out of gas because he allowed two runs in his last partial inning. Bryan Morris came on to strand three runners and ended up throwing 1.2 scoreless IP, with two Ks. Doug Slaten also threw 1.2 scoreless innings. Chase d'Arnaud went 2-4 with a triple and Eric Fryer went 2-4. Starling Marte went 0-4.

-P- Altoona beat Richmond, 8-3, in a game shortened by rain to six and a half innings. Kyle McPherson had another start where all his numbers looked good except the runs allowed. He gave up three in five innings, on five hits and a walk. He fanned eight. Brock Holt and Drew Maggi each went 2-3, and Quincy Latimore hit his 11th HR.

-P- State College scored three in the 8th to beat Mahoning Valley, 8-6. Luis Heredia had his weakest start of the season, allowing three runs over five innings on six hits and a walk, with three Ks. If that's what Heredia's bad starts are going to look like, he's in good shape. Heredia left with a 5-3 lead, but Josh Smith quickly gave up three runs while retiring only one batter. Barrett Barnes went 2-4 with a double and two steals. Barnes is showing good secondary skills to go with his overall 292/407/472 line. He has 11 walks and 13 Ks, and is 9-10 in stealing bases. He's also improving: he posted a .583 OPS in a dozen June games, while in 14 July games his OPS is 1.163. Jodaneli went 2-3 and Jacob Stallings 2-5.

-P- The GCL Pirates split a doubleheader with the Phillies. The Bucs won game one, 6-3, as Jon Sandfort's second pro start went a lot better than his first. He went two scoreless innings, allowing a hit and a walk, with one K. Dilson Herrera, Candon Myles and Eric Wood all went 2-3, with Herrera connecting for two doubles, Myles a triple and Wood a double. The Bucs dropped game two, 3-2, in eight innings. They had only four hits, including Jorge Bishop's first HR.

-P- The DSL Pirates1 beat the Marlins, 8-3. Omar Basulto, a Mexican lefty, got the win with 2.2 scoreless innings in relief. He gave up two hits and a walk, and struck out three. Daniel Arribas went 3-5 with a double, Edgardo Munoz and Tito Polo each 2-4.

-P- The DSL Pirates2 beat the joint Diamondbacks/Reds team, 7-5. Christian Henriquez pitched four scoreless innings in relief, allowing a hit and a walk, and fanning four. Jose Salazar and Yunior Aquiles each went 2-3, Dennis Hurtarte went 2-4, and Rodney Polonia went 2-2 with a double, a walk and two steals.
