Pirates' Minor League Roundup: Gerrit Cole Dominates

Having conveniently waited for a day when everybody is in a better mood, the minor league roundup returns . . .

-P- Indianapolis wasted a strong start by Henricus VandenHurk and dropped a 2-1 decision to Rochester in ten innings. VandenHurk allowed just one run over eight innings on seven hits and no walks. He struck out five. Tim Wood allowed a run in the bottom of the 10th to end it. Brock Holt and Brandon Boggs went 2-4. Holt is hitting .382 since his promotion.

-P- Altoona also wasted an outstanding start in a 2-1 loss, this one from Gerrit Cole against Portland. Cole went six, giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits and no walks. He fanned nine. The two runs scored in the 6th on a couple of groundball singles, an error, a ground out and a wild pitch. The error was by Oscar Tejeda, who was making his first appearance at shortstop since 2009 and only his second at any infield position this year. Christian Marrero hit his first HR for the Curve since moving down from Indianapolis.

-P- Bradenton edged Charlotte, 5-4. Casey Sadler allowed the four runs in 5.2 IP on a pair of two-run HRs. Alex Dickerson went 2-4 and Dan Grovatt hit his 7th HR.

-P- West Virginia lost to Kannapolis, 4-3, in 13 innings. Robby Rowland started and allowed two runs, one earned, in six-plus innings. He gave up five hits, walked none and fanned three. Porfirio Lopez gave up four hits and five walks over 5.2 IP in relief, but only one run. He fanned seven and picked off two. Eric Avila went 2-3 for the Power, with a double, his 5th HR and two walks. Alen Hanson went 1-3 with a double and two walks. Gregory Polanco hasn't yet returned to the lineup.

-P- State College beat Jamestown, 9-3. Joely Rodriguez allowed two runs over six innings and Ryan Hafner managed three scoreless innings. Walker Gourley went 3-4 with a double and four runs scored. D.J. Crumlich went 2-4 with a double.

-P- The GCL Pirates won a wild one from the Blue Jays, 12-11. The Pirates scored five in the 8th to take a 12-8 lead, then hung on through a three-run Jays rally in the 9th. Jon Sandfort started and allowed a hit, a run and two walks in 2.1 IP, with one K. Andrew Lambo continued overmatching GCL hurlers on his rehab, going 3-4 with a double. Max Moroff went 2-3 with two walks, a double and his first pro HR. Wyatt Mathisen, Eric Wood and Dilson Herrera went 2-4. Stetson Allie went 2-5 with four RBIs, while Kevin Ross hit his first pro HR. Luis Urena evidently didn't get the memo, as he went 0-4 with four Ks.

-P- The DSL Pirates1 allowed a run in the bottom of the 9th and lost, 4-3, to the Mets2. Christian Henriquez allowed two runs, one earned, over five innings. Pablo Reyes went 2-2 with a double, Luis Benitez 2-3 and Daniel Arribas 2-4.

-P- The DSL Pirates2 scored single runs to tie their game with the Giants in the bottom of the 9th and 10th, then won the game in the 11th, 8-7, on an error. Gustavo Barrios, Carlos Ozuna, Yunior Aquiles, Edgar Munoz and Angelo Del Castillo each had two hits.
