Pirates' Minor League Roundup: Willy Garcia Goes Deep Twice; Wyatt Mathisen Hits First Pro HR

Bradenton got Monday off, but everybody else took the field . . .

-P- Indianapolis shut out Syracuse, 2-0. Kris Johnson, Bryan Morris and Tim Wood combined on the four-hitter. Morris fanned four in two and two-thirds. Brock Holt chose to conserve his energy in two of his five ABs, but hit a single and two doubles in the other three. He's now hitting .423 in AAA. Alex Presley went 1-2 with three walks and Jeff Clement went 2-4 with his 16th HR.

-P- Altoona scored five in the 8th to beat Trenton, 6-2. With starting pitching becoming a bit scarce around the system, the Curve pulled Jeff Inman out of the bullpen and he threw four shutout innings, allowing one hit, with no walks or Ks. Tim Alderson gave up the two runs in two innings. Vic Black pitched the 9th and only fanned two, leaving his K/9 at 13.0. (You'd think he'd at least be in line to move up to AAA for the playoffs.) Ramon Cabrera went 3-5 with a double and Andrew Lambo went 2-5.

-P- West Virginia stomped Charleston, 9-2. Willy Garcia took over the organization's minor league lead in HRs by belting his 17th and 18th. He finished 3-4 with four RBIs. The blistering hot Eric Avila went 2-4 with a two-run double, but failed to go deep for the first time in five games. Francisco Aponte went 3-5 with a double. Mike Jefferson allowed one run on three hits and no walks over six innings, with four strikeouts.

-P- State College scored three in the 7th to take a 4-2 lead over Williamsport, but the still-struggling Ryan Hafner gave up three in the bottom half and the Spikes went on to lose, 6-4. Starter Jason Creasy gave up two runs on five hits and two walks over four and a third with one strikeout. D.J. Crumlich went 2-4 with a double and four RBIs, Yhonathan Barrios went 2-3 and Jared Lakind 2-4.

-P- The GCL Pirates beat the Braves, 3-2, on a two-out, 8th inning single by Edwin Espinal, who also had a double in four ABs. The other two runs came on HRs. Wyatt Mathisen hit his first pro longball, an opposite field shot that had some help from a strong breeze. He finished 1-3 with a walk. The other HR, Eric Wood's 4th of the year, also had a nice tail wind but still traveled about 420 feet. Max Moroff went 2-3 with a walk and is now hitting 339/453/424. Harold Ramirez went 2-4 with a double. Starter Axel Diaz allowed just one hit over four shutout innings. Isaac Sanchez threw three shutout innings to claim the win.

-P- The box score for the DSL Pirates1 is not yet available.

-P- The DSL Pirates2 dropped a 2-0 shutout to the joint Reds/Diamondbacks team. Each team had only three hits, but the Bucs chipped in five errors. The . . . uh . . . Redbacks? scored both their runs in the 1st without benefit of a hit. Christopher De Leon threw five shutout innings in relief, allowing three hits and three walks, and striking out five. The offense was kinda bad.
