Padres 3, Pirates 1

Kevin Correia got off to a poor start, allowing a double to Everth Cabrera to lead off the game and then an RBI single to the next batter, Will Venable. (To be fair, Venable's hit went right under Clint Barmes' glove.) Venable moved to third on a passed ball and a groundout, then came home on a groundout by Yasmani Grandal.

In the second, Correia gave up a one-out single to Cameron Maybin, who ended up scoring on a sacrifice and then singles by Cabrera and Venable. 3-0. Correia ended up going just 4.1 innings after pitching two innings yesterday.

Edinson Volquez struck out 10 for the Padres, and the Pirates didn't get to him at all until the sixth. Andrew McCutchen hit an infield single and then advanced on an error, and then came home when Neil Walker whacked a line-drive single to right.

Kyle McPherson pitched his major-league debut in the sixth and did well, striking out two in two scoreless innings. You'd hate to say that McPherson probably should have started over Correia, but oh well.

The Pirates put two men on in the seventh, but Brad Brach got a big strikeout against McCutchen to shut down the rally. In the eighth, Luke Gregerson allowed two batters to reach base and generally pitched a thoroughly terrible inning, serving up one bad pitch after another (one breaking ball to Gaby Sanchez, in particular, was practically a gift-wrapped three-run homer, but Sanchez got in front of it and hit an upper-deck foul ball), but he got Sanchez to pop out and Rod Barajas to ground out to end the threat.

Justin Wilson pitched the eighth and allowed two singles but struck out the side, throwing 91-94. The Pirates weren't able to rally in the ninth, as the game ended with yet another strikeout by McCutchen.
