Justin Upton trade: Upton (finally) headed to Braves

Christian Petersen

It looks like Justin Upton has finally been traded, and he's heading to the Atlanta Braves, along with Chris Johnson. Upton will join his brother B.J. in the Atlanta outfield.

Current reports on Twitter have the Diamondbacks getting five players, and if the reports are accurate and complete (and they might not be, at this point), it's an underwhelming return for Arizona. The D'Backs get Martin Prado, a good player who's a free agent after the season. They also get Randall Delgado, a young and talented but control-challenged starter.

This is the part of the deal where you'd expect the minor-league players involved to make up the difference, but they really don't. Zeke Spruill is 23 and just finished what was only a passable year in the rotation at Class AA Mississippi. Nick Ahmed, a shortstop, will be 23 in March and posted a .728 OPS last year at Class A+ Lynchburg. And first baseman Brandon Drury is very young and hit well in the Appy League in 2011, but doesn't have much else to recommend him at this point.

John Sickels had Spruill as Atlanta's No. 5 prospect and Ahmed as their No. 7 prospect, but the Braves don't have a top farm system.

Anyway, I have to run to class, and it's possible some details of the trade haven't come out yet. Feel free to use this thread to discuss it, and I'll check in later.
