Jeff Karstens scratched, will hit DL

Jeff Karstens was scratched from his start today and will head for the DL with shoulder discomfort. That means, obviously, that he won't make the 25-man roster out of spring training. Chris Leroux will start in his place. Leroux could be a longer-term option to replace Karstens in the rotation, but my guess now is that the Pirates will go with A.J. Burnett, Wandy Rodriguez, James McDonald, Jeff Locke and Jonathan Sanchez. Kyle McPherson and Jeanmar Gomez are also possibilities, although I'd say Gomez is a fairly remote one.
