Jeff Locke strong as Pirates win final Grapefruit League game

J. Meric

Jeff Locke pitched six excellent innings as the Pirates beat the Yankees 2-1 in their final Grapefruit League game Thursday.

Locke struck out three batters, walked none, and allowed no runs. After the disappointing news we've gotten about the Pirates' opening day pitching staff, it's nice to see Locke rounding into form, even though it probably doesn't mean anything.

Hiroki Kuroda pitched six shutout innings of his own for the Yanks, and the Pirates managed just four hits the entire game, but they managed two runs in the seventh when Travis Snider walked, Jose Tabata singled, the Yankees' David Aardsma threw a wild pitch, Stefan Welch grounded out, and Jeff Larish singled.
