Pirates activate Brandon Inge, start him at third

USA TODAY Sports

The Pirates will activate Brandon Inge, it appears -- Bill Brink writes that Inge is with the Pirates in Philadelphia.

Inge is a good defensive player, so having him on the roster doesn't bother me quite as much as it seems to bother some here, but having him and John McDonald on the roster at the same time is depressing and pointless. Inge started at shortstop in Indianapolis recently, but he's not a shortstop, so if he's on the roster as a bench player, I don't see how the Pirates can avoid continuing to carry another bench infielder. That likely means they'll be demoting Alex Presley, but I suppose we'll have to wait and see.

UPDATE 3:38 pm: Karen Price reports that Inge will, in fact, be activated, and that the Pirates are starting him at third base in tonight's game.

UPDATE 3:40: Presley has, in fact, been optioned back to Triple-A.
