Pirates acquire Graham Godfrey

USA TODAY Sports

After acquiring Atahualpa Severino, the Pirates have acquired another minor-league pitcher. This time it's Graham Godfrey, in a trade with the Red Sox (for, I assume, nothing of note).

Like Severino, Godfrey isn't likely to pitch in the majors, because he's worse than any number of options the Pirates already have -- he's really a minor-league-free-agent type. So the Pirates appear to be padding their depth at Indianapolis. The question is why they're doing that. As Tim notes, they've lost some pitchers due to injury, and Mike Zagurski was recently promoted. But they still have a ton of pitchers right now. We can only speculate right now, but there may be another shoe dropping in the next few days.
