Jim Callis' new mock draft has the Pirates taking UNC third baseman Colin Moran at No. 9 and Indiana State lefty Sean Manaea at No. 14. Callis also mentions that high school LHP/OF Trey Ball could also be a possibility. High school catcher Reese McGuire, who has also been connected to the Pirates, goes to the Marlins at No. 6.
Manaea would be an interesting pick. His stock has fallen this year -- he performed very well in the Cape Cod League, throwing as hard as 96 MPH with a good slider, but he's had a hip injury since then, and his velocity was in the mid-80s in his last start. (The last two links are Insider-only.) Manaea is a risky pitcher at this point, because the team that drafts him will be hoping his stuff comes back. MLB.com currently ranks him as the No. 7 prospect in the draft, but some mocks have him as low at No. 18.
Manaea also a Scott Boras client, so, as Callis notes, you could easily see the Pirates taking him and staring Boras down, because they've done it before. It's easy to envision a situation where the risk and the Boras connection cause Manaea to drop, and the Pirates shrug their shoulders and take him at No. 14, just as they did with Mark Appel last year, because he's still there and the pick is protected.
