As some of you pointed out in the comments, tonight could be the last start of A.J. Burnett's career as a pitcher. It's unlikely-- even if the Pirates don't win the one-game playoff, in which case Burnett would get at least one playoff start, my guess is that Burnett will be back next year. But since Burnett has talked about retirement, it's possible.
\Whatever happens tonight, if this does turn out to be Burnett's last start, he'll have gone out with a bang, morphing from an under-performing, overpaid veteran in New York to something like a folk hero in Pittsburgh. Oh, and he's leading the National League in strikeouts per nine innings this year, with 10.0. He's still at the top of his game as a pitcher, so losing him to retirement would really be a waste.
