Jordy Mercer, Brandon Cumpton key irrelevant win to sweep Reds

Frank Victores-USA TODAY Sports

Jordy Mercer, Brandon Cumpton and the Pirates beat the Reds 4-2 in a game there was no reason to care about.

Mercer singled, trpled and hit an inside-the-park home run that came when Jay Bruce dove and missed for a shallow line drive in right field. Garrett Jones, meanwhile, hit a solo homer in the eighth in what might turn out to be his final at-bat for the Bucs.

Cumpton, meanwhile, cruised through five scoreless innings. Stolmy Pimentel racked up two scoreless innings of his own before Jeanmar Gomez gave up two runs in the eighth.

The Pirates thus completed a sweep of the Reds in Cincinnati, and ended their 2013 regular season at 94-68.
