The Pirates announce they have acquired righty reliever Rob Scahill from the Rockies for minor league pitcher Shane Carle. Scahill was designated for assignment last week.
Scahill, 27, hasn't accomplished much at the big league level, but he throws hard (with an average fastball velocity of around 94 MPH and a hard slider), and he put up fairly good numbers at Triple-A Colorado Springs last season. He should have an option remaining, as far as I can tell, so he'll likely begin the 2015 season at Indianapolis, perhaps with the idea that the Pirates' coaching might help him.
Carle, the Pirates' 10th-round pick in 2013, pitched with West Virginia and Bradenton last season. He has good control and gets his share of ground balls, but he's already 23, and looks like he might become a Brandon Cumpton type if everything breaks right for him. Trading him for someone with a sliver of a chance of helping the Pirates next year makes sense.
