The Pirates have announced that they've added Brad Fischer to their big-league coaching staff. They've also switched their base coaches, with Nick Leyva moving from third to first and Rick Sofield from first to third. There's no word yet on who will replace Jeff Banister as the Pirates' bench coach.
Fischer has spent the last three years serving as the Pirates' minor league field coordinator. Prior to joining the Pirates organization, he had served as a bullpen coach and first base coach with the Athletics (in whose system he also briefly played, as a catcher). He managed the State College Spikes for the Pirates for a year early in Neal Huntington's tenure, then left the organization to serve as the Brewers' third base coach.
Obviously, Fischer is pretty well qualified to serve as a coach at the big league level, and since he was already working in the Pirates' minor league system, he's well aware of the Bucs' organizational approach.
