Cubs met with Russell Martin yesterday

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Cubs met with Russell Martin yesterday, Bruce Levine of CBS Chicago writes. Jon Heyman had previously written that the Cubs intended to pursue Martin. Here's Levine:

Martin is considered one of the top catchers in the game and will have further serious conversations with four teams, including the Cubs, according to industry sources. The Pirates, Martin’s most recent club, the Dodgers and Blue Jays are other teams that Martin and his agent will visit with.

It emerged earlier this week that the Blue Jays were considering signing Martin. It's obvious why the Dodgers would be interested.

As for the Cubs, Welington Castillo hit poorly last season and rated even worse as a framer. If Chicago were to acquire Martin, Castillo would make a very interesting trade candidate, but it's easy to see why the Cubs feel Martin would be a big upgrade. It's not surprising that two very saber-friendly front offices in Chicago and Los Angeles would be interested in Martin. Unfortunately, they're both also large-market teams. It's going to be tough for the Pirates to outbid them.
