Pirates scouting Johan Santana

Mike Stobe

The Pirates are among a number of teams scouting Johan Santana, CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports. Santana, who's coming back from shoulder surgery, likely won't be back until June, but he threw a bullpen for the Pirates and other teams.

Santana is a fly ball pitcher, so he doesn't fit the Pirates' usual mold, but there are worse places for lefty reclamation projects to go than Pittsburgh. Still, Santana hasn't really had his vintage form since 2008, and he doesn't even have the stuff of a pitcher like Edinson Volquez, so the Pirates would have their work cut out for them if they signed him.

Andrew Marchand reported back in December that the Pirates were interested in Santana.
