Three years after his awful 2011 half-season with the Pirates, Matt Diaz appears likely to retire -- he hasn't announced his retirement, but he isn't looking for a new contract. Diaz arrived in Pittsburgh as part of Neal Huntington's poor 2010-2011 offseason haul, which also included Lyle Overbay, Kevin Correia and Scott Olsen.
As bad as Diaz's Pirates tenure was, it never got better for him after that, as he struggled with the Braves in 2011 and 2012 and appeared in just 10 games for the Marlins last year. It's easy to forget that, in his peak, he was a useful player, even though he never really played full-time and didn't contribute much defensively.
