Chris Stewart likely to have knee surgery

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Catcher Chris Stewart will visit Dr. James Andrews and is likely to have knee surgery, Bill Brink tweets. That means it's now almost certain that Tony Sanchez will make the team. It's unclear now who would fill the backup catching job if Sanchez or Russell Martin were to get hurt -- Nevin Ashley, maybe?

Anyway, it's a shame that Stewart will likely be out for awhile, since his pitch-framing skills can help the Pirates' pitching staff. But that's what depth is for. Sanchez should be perfectly capable in the backup role, so the Pirates should be fine, as long as no one else gets hurt.
