It's no surprise, but Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe notes that the Pirates and Brewers are scouting Mike Carp. Carp or Ike Davis would be the most logical fits for the Pirates' first-base opening, given that they're left-handed, they're decent hitters, and they're expendable. The Red Sox don't have much space for Carp at any of the positions we know he can handle (first base, left field, DH).
The Brewers, whose current first base situation involves an unholy trinity of Mark Reynolds, Lyle Overbay and Juan Francisco, also make sense as a suitor for Carp, and I wouldn't be surprised to see the Brewers get either Davis or Carp and the Pirates wind up with the other player. I can see a case for either one, depending on how much it costs to get them. Carp is more versatile (sort of) and cheaper, and he's coming off the better year. Davis is a bit younger and has a longer track record as a regular.
