Notes: Oliver Perez agrees to terms with Diamondbacks

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Diamondbacks have agreed to terms with Oliver Perez on a two-year deal. I doubt anyone in baseball four years ago would have bet on Perez still being in the league in 2014, so it's much to his credit that he's been able to reinvent himself as a lefty reliever, and a pretty good one. This is also some pretty nice work by his agent, holding out this long and winding up with a multiyear deal. I still have a soft spot in my heart for Perez. It's easy to imagine an alternate reality where he became a Cy Young winner and perennial All-Star (and if you don't believe me, check his 2004 stats and his age). But given how far south things went for him, this has to be a good consolation prize.

A few more quick notes from around baseball:

-P- The Cardinals are about to sign Matt Carpenter to a six-year extension in the $50-55 million range.

-P- Tim has the Pirates' minor-league spring training roster.

-P- The Pirates' game against the Blue Jays yesterday was rained out.
