The Pirates have placed Wandy Rodriguez on the disabled list with knee inflammation, and have promoted Jared Hughes to take his place on the active roster.
That Rodriguez is headed to the DL should come as no surprise to anyone who has tried to watch him pitch these last few weeks. I'm not sure how serious the knee trouble is, but this DL stint will allow Rodriguez to take a couple weeks off and press the reset button on his season. We'll see if that's what he needs, but at the very least, this move gets him out of the Pirates' rotation for awhile.
Hughes is optionable, so he'll likely be up for just a few days until Rodriguez's turn in the rotation comes up again, at which point the Pirates will probably replace him with someone else. Jeff Locke is scheduled to pitch for Indianapolis tonight; we'll see if he actually makes that start, or how long he pitches if he does. Ordinarily, he would be the natural choice to replace Rodriguez, but as readers have pointed out in the comments, he's returning from injury and only pitched five innings in his last start, so the Pirates could go with someone like Brandon Cumpton instead.
