This was unexpected. It's hard to believe some team in need of relief didn't think he was worth $950,000. The decision for Mazzaro now probably becomes whether he thinks he can more or less duplicate that salary in free agency. Obviously, this shows that he has very little, if any, trade value. Which in turn means that bringing him to camp and letting him compete for a spot was the optimum value that he had to the Pirates.
