Pirates MiLB recap: 5/14/14

The Pirates got good outings from a couple of upper level pitchers and Harold Ramirez is heating up. Bradenton was rained out.

-- Casey Sadler (pictured) bounced back from a bad start by shutting down Pawtucket in a 3-1 Indianapolis win.  Sadler gave up one unearned run on just one hit in six innings.  He walked three and struck out seven.  Jake Brigham followed with three scoreless, one-hit innings, with four strikeouts, for the save.  Pawtucket has what looks like a good lineup -- Ryan Roberts, Daniel Nava, Gavin Cecchini, Ryan Lavarnway, Brandon Snyder and, most importantly, Brock Holt! -- so a two-hitter is impressive.  The Indians had just six hits, as one of Boston's top prospects, Allen Webster, fanned nine in less than six innings.  Chris Dickerson and Matt Hague each went 2-4 with a double.  Gregory Polanco chose to save his hits for a time when they were needed, going 0-2 with two walks.

-- Altoona failed to hold an early lead and lost to Akron, 5-3.  Joely Rodriguez had an encouraging start, finally missing some bats as he fanned seven in five innings.  Rodriguez was let down by his defense, specifically Alen Hanson, who committed two errors in a three-run 5th.  Rodriguez finished with four runs allowed, two earned, on four hits and two walks.  Practically everybody went 1-4, although Keon Broxton came out in a double switch so he went 1-3 with a double.

-- West Virginia beat Augusta in ten innings, 5-4.  Danny Collins hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th to drive Reese McGuire in with the winning run.  Ramirez went 3-4 with a double and a walk, and McGuire went 2-5.  JaCoby Jones was 0-5 before getting ejected.  Wyatt Mathisen was 1-4 with a walk and Erich Weiss was 1-2 with two walks.  Starter Shane Carle allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits and no walks over six innings.  He fanned two.  Yhonathan Barrios fanned three in two scoreless innings to get the win.  McGuire was 2-2 in throwing out base stealers.  He's now thrown out 50% on the season.
