Chris Davis homers 3 times as Orioles crush Pirates, 9-2

Justin K. Aller

Chris Davis hit three home runs as the Orioles crushed the Pirates 9-2 Tuesday.

The Pirates scored first with a run in the third, but the Orioles got two on a series of singles and walks in the fourth, then really went for it in the fifth in a four-run inning capped by back-to-back homers by Davis and Nelson Cruz.

Francisco Liriano exited after that inning (having struck out four and walked two), and then it was time for Jared Hughes and Jeanmar Gomez. Hughes gave up Davis' second bomb in the seventh inning, and Gomez allowed Davis' third blast, a two-run shot, in the ninth.

Along the way, Ike Davis hit a solo homer (it was a good day for guys named Davis, I suppose), and the Pirates actually did manage to threaten in the seventh and eighth innings, only to ground into double plays each time. They also went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
