Pirates claim Josh Wall

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

The Pirates have claimed righty Josh Wall, via a tweet by the Angels. Wall has made only limited appearances in the majors over the last three years, posting an ERA of 15.15 in 13.2 IP. His AAA record isn't much more inspiring; he has an ERA of 4.51 and WHIP of 1.41 there in 108 games.  His K/9 is 8.6. Scouting reports refer to his fastball as sitting in the mid-90s, but he's thrown only in the low-90s in the majors. His big pitch is a slider. I'm assuming he'll go to AAA as depth, something the Pirates are short on in the bullpen, especially if Brandon Cumpton and Casey Sadler get called up as starters.

UPDATE: As noted in the comments by Battlingbucs, Phil Irwin has been designated for assignment. Irwin has been trying to recover from nerve transposition surgery.  He struggled badly as a starter early in the season, but had been doing better out of the bullpen.  There's a good chance he'll clear waivers and be outrighted to AAA.
