The Pirates won 2-1 as Starling Marte tripled and then came home on an error in one thrilling play in the bottom of the ninth. He was initially called out, but the play was overturned, giving the Pirates a 2-1 wait-off victory.
Charlie Morton had a very strong outing, going eight innings and only allowing one unearned run. That run came in the second, when Brandon Belt singled, stole second, moved to third on Tony Sanchez's error, and came home on a sacrifice fly. It was a huge performance for Morton, since the Pirates' bullpen was spent after last night's mess of a game.
Tim Hudson, meanwhile, pitched the entire game for the Giants and matched Morton frame for frame. He too gave up a run in the second -- Marte and Ike Davis singled, and Marte came home on Sanchez's groundout.
After that, not much happened until the ninth. Andrew McCutchen led off the bottom of the inning with a single, but Pedro Alvarez grounded into a double play, and it looked like the game would head to extra innings.
Instead, Marte smashed a hit to the opposite field that banged off the Clemente Wall. Marte charged around second as Hunter Pence chased the ball back toward the infield, then darted home when infielder Ehire Adrianza botched the throw to third. Pablo Sandoval picked up the ball and threw home, where Buster Posey stood upright and top of the plate and applied the tag. Marte was called out, and I yelled, "No!" to no one in particular, not because I had any idea what was going on, but because it felt like this was the sort of luck the Pirates have been getting all year.
Replays revealed, though, that Posey missed Marte's hand, and didn't tag his upper body until after his hand was already across the plate. The play was reviewed, which took a lot of drama out of the moment, but give the system credit -- the call was reversed, and justice was served. The Pirates ended up with a 2-1 victory.
