Pirates 1-hit Padres, still lose 3-2

Denis Poroy

Francisco Liriano and the Pirates allowed just one hit against the Padres, but walked nine batters en route to a 3-2 loss Wednesday.

Chris Denorfia walked to lead off the Padres' half of the first, then stole second. Then Everth Cabrera hit a bunt single, the Padres' only hit of the game. Denorfia then came home on a sacrifice fly. Liriano then hit Chase Headley, and Cabrera came home on a force out by Tommy Medica that featured a throwing error by Josh Harrison.

The Pirates stranded Harrison after he tripled in the third, but cut the lead to 2-1 with Andrew McCutchen's solo homer in the fourth. But in the bottom half of the inning, Liriano walked the bases full, then allowed another walk to Denorfia to make it 3-1.

Harrison hit an RBI double in the fifth, but the Pirates failed to score again even after Harrison led off the eighth with a double. Harrison had three extra-base hits but didn't score any runs.
