MLB mock draft: Pirates select Grant Holmes

Reid Compton-USA TODAY Sports

Baseball America's last mock draft still has Brady Aiken going No. 1 overall to the Astros. It has Jacob Gatewood going to the Rays at No. 20, the Dodgers taking Touki Toussaint at No. 22, and the Pirates taking South Carolina high school righty Grant Holmes at No. 24.

The Pirates are seen as the floor for Gatewood and Toussaint. They’d have their pick of prep arms here, including Holmes.

Holmes can hit 100 MPH to go with a hard curveball. His changeup is apparently underdeveloped, although that's not unusual for a high school pitcher, and BA thinks it could be a very good pitch someday. He's a bit undersized and isn't the "projectable" type the Pirates like (as you can probably tell from the photo above), although if he's already throwing in the high 90s, that might not matter so much. He's committed to the University of Florida.
