With their second-round pick, the Pirates selected Mitch Keller, a righty high school pitcher from Iowa who has a commitment to UNC. He got a bump in his velocity this year and now throws in the low 90s. He has a reasonable curveball and could wind up with a decent changeup as well.
Baseball America ranked Keller the No. 76 prospect in the draft. MLB.com ranked him No. 69. He's 6-foot-3 and is considered projectable. We'll see how signable he is; he's committed to a major college program, so if the Pirates save some money on their first two picks (as they should), it's possible they'll need to spend some of it here.
