The Pirates have asked the Padres about closer Huston Street, Jon Heyman reports. The Angels also reportedly have interest. Street is making $7MM this year, with a $7MM option next season.
Street is a good pitcher, but for what he's likely to cost, I'm not sure he's the best choice. He has 258 career saves, which means he's a Proven Closer, and those pitchers usually fetch more than good relievers who don't close. Also, his 1.09 ERA this season is a mirage -- he's solid, but not dominant. Finally, the Padres are reportedly not ruling out the possibility of being competitive next year, which might mean they won't be desperate to deal Street, since they control him in 2015. If the Pirates can get him at a reasonable price, fantastic. They certainly can use him. But I would bet they'll find better deals elsewhere.
