Pirates trade rumors: Bucs ask about Emilio Bonifacio

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Pirates have asked the Cubs about Emilio Bonifacio, Joel Sherman reports. With Josh Harrison in the fold, I wouldn't think another 2B/3B/OF would be high on the Pirates' list of priorities, but so much depends on a bunch of moving parts (like Starling Marte and Clint Barmes' injuries, and whatever's going on with Pedro Alvarez). And if Bonifacio is going to hit for average and play strong defense the way he has this year, he's a pretty useful player for almost anyone.

Still, I'm not sure I'd read too much into this yet. The Pirates ask about lots of players. That doesn't mean they'll trade for them. I still expect that their top priority will be a pitcher of some kind. Perhaps some sort of package deal involving Bonifacio and one of the Cubs' relievers (particularly Wesley Wright, who Sherman also mentions) would make sense.
