Rob Biertempfel reports that Gerrit Cole has been placed on the 15-day disabled list. Brandon Cumpton has been recalled from Triple-A and will pitch Wednesday against the Cardinals.
This is the second time that Cole has been placed on the disabled list this season. The first stint was due to shoulder fatigue. This one is because of soreness in the right lat.
"It's very frustrating," Cole said. "The bullpen just didn't go well. I wasn't myself. If you can't be yourself in a bullpen, how can you do it when you pitch (in a game)? It's hard enough to get through the Cardinals' lineup when you're feeling good."
So, for the immediate future the Pirates' rotation will include Edinson Volquez, Jeff Locke, Vance Worley and Brandon Cumpton. Each has pitched beyond expectations this season, and the Bucs will have to hope that none of them suddenly takes on water. Under the best circumstances, Cole will only miss one start because of the break (if the roster move is retroactive, which I assume it will be).
In more positive news, Francisco Liriano had a successful rehab start for Indianapolis. He threw six shutout innings, allowing three hits, walking none and striking out eight.
