Charlie Morton held the Cardinals to one hit over seven innings, but the Pirates still lost 2-0 Monday as Matt Adams hit a walk-off two-run homer in the ninth.
Morton struck out five and walked two, getting his usual array of ground balls and benefiting from a great catch by Josh Harrison, who laid out to catch a Jhonny Peralta line drive in the second. (Harrison also picked up an outfield assist on a double play with Tony Watson on the hill in the eighth.)
Adam Wainwright pitched seven scoreless innings for St. Louis, striking out five and walking three. The game remained in a scoreless tie until the ninth, even though the Pirates had baserunners in every inning before that.
In the ninth, Justin Wilson relieved Watson and allowed a leadoff walk to Matt Carpenter. He then hung a breaking pitch to Matt Adams, who belted it to deep right to give the Cardinals the 2-0 victory.
