Pirates claim Ramon Cabrera

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Pirates have claimed catcher Ramon Cabrera from the Tigers. The Tigers designated Cabrera for assignment so that they could add Buck Farmer (yes, that's his name), who will start against the Pirates tonight.

Cabrera was originally a Pirates prospect, but they traded him to Detroit a couple years ago for Andy Oliver. Cabrera hasn't hit much in Double-A this year, posting a .277/.329/.358 line, and he doesn't profile well as a big-league hitter despite hitting for good averages in the past. (He hit .343 for Bradenton in 2011 but has only really advanced one level since then -- he got a brief taste of Triple-A last season but didn't hit well there.) So I'm not sure there's a ton of upside here, unless the Pirates really love his defense, in which case they might not have traded him for Oliver in the first place. The Pirates might at some point try to sneak Cabrera through waivers themselves.
