The Pirates erupted in the late innings, scoring three runs in the eighth and five in the ninth, and beat the Diamondbacks 9-4 Friday night.
Edinson Volquez and Vidal Nuno each pitched four scoreless innings to start the game. In the fifth, though, Volquez gave up a single to Didi Gregorious, then hit Nuno. Ender Inciarte followed with a three-run homer. Volquez then hit David Peralta, who later came around to score on a throwing error and then a wild pitch.
The Pirates got one back in the sixth, but were still down 4-1 in the eighth when they finally started really hitting. Josh Harrison hit a triple that was nearly a homer, Jordy Mercer walked, Andrew McCutchen hit an RBI double, and Pedro Alvarez hit a two-run double to tie the game. Then in the ninth, Harrison and Mercer hit consecutive doubles, and the Bucs brought home three more runs with a series of singles.
Ernesto Frieri pitched a scoreless ninth, though he angered the Diamondbacks by hitting Paul Goldschmidt.
