Andrew McCutchen's oblique injury is expected to land him on the 15-day disabled list, Ron Cook writes. Starling Marte is likely to rejoin the team after his own stint on the disabled list and play center field.
This is ... bad. The Pirates do at least have center field well covered, but they're not only losing one of baseball's best players for several weeks or a month, they still have a hole in their outfield. Marte will likely be the corresponding move once McCutchen is officially placed on the DL, but beyond that, it's unclear whether the Pirates will make some other sort of move now that it's fairly clear they'll be down an outfielder for longer than they'd hoped. Andrew Lambo has hit very well at Indianapolis, and Mel Rojas could be another promotion candidate. Travis Snider will also likely receive more playing time than he would have with everyone healthy. The Bucs could also make some sort of trade -- perhaps Marlon Byrd can get to them on waivers again.
