Pirates fall to Cubs, 6-4

Joe Sargent

Jeff Locke gave up three runs in the third inning (two on a homer on a mistake changeup to Javier Baez) and a late comeback bid fell short as the Pirates lost to the Cubs Saturday night, 6-4. The Braves, Brewers and Giants lost, so the Pirates didn't lose any ground in the Wild Card race. The Cardinals did win, however.

The Cubs added two runs in the seventh off Brandon Cumpton, then another off Justin Wilson in the eighth. The Bucs made it close when Russell Martin hit a bases-clearing double in the eighth, and Travis Snider led off the ninth with a solo homer. But Hector Rondon retired the last three batters he faced (the first of whom was pinch-hitter Brent Morel, hardly who you want to see when it's time to get a rally started), and the Pirates didn't even put the tying run on base in the ninth.
