Links: Charlie Morton to return Tuesday

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

-P- Charlie Morton is set to return against the Red Sox on Tuesday. He'll start, and Vance Worley will head to the bullpen. Morton has been out since August with a sports hernia and wasn't very effective for several starts before that.

-P- In case you missed it, Ben Lindbergh of Grantland has a great article on how the Pirates' health gives them an edge.

-P- Rob Biertempfel writes that the Pirates should start Gerrit Cole if they face the Giants in the Wild Card game. I'd probably go with Francisco Liriano, although it's not as easy a decision as it probably was last year, when the Pirates were facing a Reds team with an Achilles heel bigger than most people's femurs. Unlike the 2013 Reds, who had no answer for a good left-handed starter (and who didn't even start Devin Mesoraco, one of only a couple players on their roster who had an edge against them), the 2014 Giants aren't unbalanced against lefties. Nonetheless, Liriano has only had two bad starts in the second half (a six-walk outing against the Reds in July and an implosion against the Braves in August), and he's been better than Cole overall.
