Starling Marte won his first Gold Glove award Tuesday night for his defense in left field. Gerrit Cole and Andrew McCutchen, who were both finalists at their positions, did not win awards, with those going to Zack Greinke and A.J. Pollock, respectively.
Anyway, Marte is a highly deserving winner, and he rated as significantly better, at least on a statistical basis, than either of the other two left field finalists, Justin Upton and Christian Yelich. Marte was highly impressive from a visual perspective too, covering tons of ground in PNC Park's huge left field and limiting opposing baserunners with a laser of an arm. In a Pirates defense that relied more heavily on positioning than on its players' actual defensive abilities, Marte stood out as a player who was very, very good in the field. May he have many more Gold Gloves in his future.
Here are the rest of this year's winners.
