A few small bits of news today:

-P- The Bucs have announced that they've hired Mike Mangan as their assistant director of amateur scouting. He'll be working under director of amateur scouting Joe DelliCarri. Mangan had spent the previous 15 years as the Blue Jays' national crosschecker. He also scouted for the Reds for five years.

-P- The Pirates have fired head groundskeeper Manny Lopez, Rob Biertempfel writes. Apparently the dismissal didn't have anything to do with the tarp monster incident in July. Biertempfel notes that players have complained recently about mound and infield conditions at PNC Park.

-P- The Mariners have designated Danny Hultzen for assignment. Hultzen, you might remember, was considered a potential choice for the Pirates with the no. 1 overall pick in the draft in 2011. The Bucs, of course, took Gerrit Cole instead, dodging a bullet. Hultzen wasn't regarded as having Cole's upside even then, and his career has been derailed by shoulder problems since being drafted.
