Radhames Liz signs with Japanese team

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Rakuten Golden Eagles in Japan (Masahiro Tanaka's old team) have announced that they've signed 2015 Pirates pitcher Radhames Liz to a one-year deal. He'll apparently make about $815,000.

This will mark the first time Liz has pitched in Japan, but it hardly seems like a surprise that he's headed there -- just in the last three years, he's pitched for teams in Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, New Hampshire, Buffalo, San Pedro de Macoris and Seoul, so he's become awfully well traveled.

The Pirates declined their option on Liz earlier this month. He pitched 23.1 innings with the Pirates last year, striking out 27 but walking 12 and posting a 4.24 ERA. He was terrific in Triple-A, however, with a 1.40 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 64.1 innings. It wouldn't be a surprise if he did quite well in Japan, and if he does, he could attract attention from an MLB team again next winter, when he'll be 33.
