Spring Training results (and non-results): Pirates fall to Red Sox, Phillies

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Keeping up with the week's Spring Training results:

-P- The Pirates lost 5-1 to the Red Sox today. A.J. Burnett allowed two walks in the third, then gave way to minor-leaguer Ryan Beckman, who gave up homers to David Ortiz and Pablo Sandoval. (Pitching against big-leaguers is a tough gig.) The Bucs managed eight hits, all singles, two of which came from Elias Diaz.

-P- Yesterday, the Pirates lost to the Phillies 3-2. Andy Oliver and Jeanmar Gomez combined for three scoreless innings against their former organization (although Rule 5 pick Oliver walked Jeff Locke on four pitches, perhaps not inspiring confidence he can stick). Both the Pirates' runs came on a two-run homer by Jordy Mercer. In a bizarre event that only could have happened in Spring Training, Brad Lincoln gave up a home run that didn't count in the bottom of the ninth when the Pirates sent him out to get work even though the game was already technically over.
