Indianapolis pitcher Nick Kingham left his start in the sixth inning today with what seems to be an elbow injury.
Indianapolis, the Pirates' International League affiliate, released a statement after the game: "Nick was removed from his start today due to discomfort in his right elbow. He is being evaluated and we will provide more information when it becomes available."
MLB.com ranks Kingham the Pirates' sixth-best prospect. That reflects his fairly high likelihood of contributing in the big leagues, not really his potential, but losing him for an extended period of time certainly would be a blow to the Pirates. Kingham represents helpful depth for the Bucs this year, and the Pirates are already a man short with Brandon Cumpton having had Tommy John surgery. It might be awhile before we know more what's going on with Kingham.
Another development to watch: Top prospect Tyler Glasnow left his start with Altoona today, too, and he apparently pointed to his hip as he was leaving. A hip injury probably isn't as worrisome as an elbow injury, but we'll see.
UPDATE: The Altoona Mirror's Cory Giger reports that Glasnow has discomfort in his ankle after sliding into second. That doesn't sound like a big deal, but we'll see.
